Postage Stamp/Colourwash Wall Art
Postage Stamp quilts are constructed from small squares (2” x 2”) cut from small print fabrics. Colourwash quilts “paint” a canvas using the small postage stamp fabric squares.
This class is a two day class designed to create a piece of wall art using 2” squares cut from many different small print fabrics. People interested in learning to improvise will find this a simple introduction to textile art.
Look through your fabric stash for sharply printed small print fabrics – florals offer a nice range of colours with which to work. You are after a mixture of very light, very dark, and medium range colours.
You don’t need a lot of fabric – a single 2” width of fabric strip gives you 20 squares in a single colour range. For a wall art size piece you will need to end up with between 30-40 different coloured fabrics. However, you don’t need to come up with all of those yourself, we will swap coloured squares in order to achieve a broad colour palette with which to work. A wall art piece can use anywhere from 150-250 2” squares of fabric.
To keep some order to your collection of coloured squares I recommend using sandwich size zippered plastic bags (you can find the cheapest at dollar store).
