Sewing Tips...
Needle cases made of wool fabric or quilted with wool batting keep needles from rusting forever!

Wipe your scissor blades with a sheet of fabric softener to make them glide through the fabric easier.

Reasons why Machine Needles Break

Poor quality needle. Use good-quality, polished steel needles.
Bent and broken needles.
Pulling the fabric as you sew puts stress on the needle and bends it out of place. Check your manual and make sure it is inserted properly.
Use heavy-gauge needles for sewing heavy fabrics like denim or leather.
You hit a pin.
The presser foot is loose. This will cause the needle to hit the foot and bend. There should be a screw with which you can tighten the foot.
The needle plate is loose. Make sure it is on securely.

ROTARY CUTTING

Time saver--stack fabric right sides together, as you would sew them and cut 4 layers at the same time
Pressing--   ironing fabric sides together before you cut helps to hold layers  together.
Seams------ for quilting remember to always press, not iron, your seams towards the darkest part of the block, then continue sewing the next seam .

How to help keep your scissors sharp

Designate one pair (or more pairs!) of scissors in your home for JUST FABRIC.  This will  keep the blades sharp! Set aside another pair for just paper or other crafts. Also keep a designated paper-only rotary cutter in  addition to your fabric-only rotary cutter. I mark my paper-only  scissors and rotary cutter with a permanent marker "P" on the plastic part of the handle.

Serger Maintenance

How long has it been since you cleaned and oiled your serger? Sergers, like cars, require routine maintenance to keep them running smoothly .  Vacuum it out regularly and always use good quality light sewing machine oil--not WD30!! Check your serger manual to see what parts should be oiled. Then Happy Sewing!

For the embroidery machine owners here is a great tip given to me by a customer--thanks Ginny!  Mark the center of you fabric. Choose the appropriate hoop and turn the inside part of the hop upside down. Place Wonder tape (a double sided tape)  on the four edges of the underside of the inside hoop. Match the center points of the hoop to the center lines of your fabric, lay hoop on top of fabric, press down on fabric firmly. AND you now have a beautifully placed piece of fabric to place in your hoop---no more rehooping to get that cantre point just right!!!
